Cricket pays tribute to Bob Woolmer
7.08, Mon Mar 19 2007

Cricket is mourning the loss of Pakistan coach and former England batsman Bob Woolmer who died suddenly in Jamaica aged 58.

Just hours after his team's shock defeat to minnows Ireland in the Cricket World Cup, Woolmer was found collapsed in his hotel room. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Woolmer played 19 Test matches for England and enjoyed huge success as a coach for Warwickshire and South Africa, as well as Pakistan.

England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier described him as "one of the world's greatest coaches", adding "everyone at ECB extends our deepest sympathy to Bob's family - we have lost a great friend".

Current England captain Michael Vaughan said: "On behalf of the England cricket team we know there has been a sad loss to the world of cricket with the death of Bob Woolmer.

"We know how much he has had an impact on the world game, the English game and we know how greatly missed he's going to be."

Former Test umpire Dickie Bird, who knew Woolmer as a player and as a coach, said: "Bob was respected worldwide. He developed into the finest cricket coach in the world.

"He was a tremendous professional cricketer and was dedicated to the game. The world will miss him. He did so much for the game he was well liked and well respected."

So very sad news.

Indeed very sad. He was a great coach. he team let him down. I hope there was no hanky paki in his death. I cant rule out that possibility....considering what a fanatical supporter or a person that bet heavily on Pakistan to win...would do.

Yes, I wonder why the police are currently viewing his death as `suspicious?`

Jamaican police has confirmed the Channel 4 News report that Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer was murdered.

Jamaican police spokesman Karl Anger gave this official statement in the early hours of this morning, British time. "The pathologist's report states that Mr Woolmer's death was due to asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation.

"In these circumstances the matter of Mr Woolmer's death is now being treated by the Jamaican police as a case of murder."

Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious by staff at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston at around 10.45am on Sunday, the day after Pakistan's shock World Cup defeat to cricketing minnows Ireland.

It is understood the coach was found in the bathroom area. Despite numerous attempts to revive him on the way to hospital, he later died.

Yesterday lunch time, Channel 4 News learned from a well placed source that Woolmer had suffered a broken neck.

'It would have taken some significant force to subdue him, but of course at this stage we do not know how many people were in the room at the time.'
Mark Shields, Jamaica police

Jamaica's deputy police commissioner Mark Shields said today police were ruling nothing out in their inquiries, including the possibility that more than one person had been involved in Woolmer's murder.

He said: "It would take some force, because Bob was a large man, It would have taken some significant force to subdue him, but of course at this stage we do not know how many people were in the room at the time.

"It could be one or more people involved in this murder."

Mr Shields confirmed Woolmer had shown no signs of life when he was found in his hotel room and said there had been no signs of a struggle.

He said police had delayed announcing Woolmer had been murdered until the results of the pathologist's report was known. "In these particular circumstances we had to make sure because there were no visible external signs [of his murder]."

Fletcher resigns as England Coach

http://uk.reuters.com/resources/r/?...&i=622909&w=160

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (Reuters) - Captain Michael Vaughan's future as one-day skipper looked less secure after England's cricket chief failed on Thursday to confirm he would continue in the role.

England, who announced coach Duncan Fletcher's resignation on Thursday, were dumped out of the World Cup by South Africa on Tuesday after a dismal tournament.

The 32-year-old Vaughan, who has never scored a one-day international century, had a woeful time with the bat which contributed to England's failure.

Asked by Reuters if Vaughan would still be one-day skipper after Saturday's final World Cup match with West Indies, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman David Morgan was cautious.

"Michael Vaughan is the England captain. I talked with the chairman of selectors (David Graveney) this morning and the selectors wish him to lead the side into the West Indies test series," Morgan told a news conference.

"That may not answer your question but it gives you a lot of information."

England face West Indies in the first test at Lord's on May 17. Their first home one-dayer is against West Indies on July 1

Vaughan, who has said he would not retire from limited overs internationals, was not expected to lose the one-day captaincy because he has been out for a year with knee trouble and was still feeling his way back in the World Cup.

There are also few other obvious candidates to take over after Andrew Flintoff was stripped of the World Cup vice captaincy following late-night drinking earlier in the tournament. Batsman Paul Collingwood could be one choice.

Peter Moores has been appointed as the new England coach, less than 24 hours after the ECB announced the resignation of Duncan Fletcher. He will take over from May 1.

It had been expected that the ECB would appoint a temporary replacement while it took time to find Fletcher's longer-term replacement, and so today's announcement caught many by surprise.

"The ECB has developed a contingency and succession plan for all key management positions," David Collier, the board's chief executive said. "Peter has been identified for some time as a leading candidate as a future England head coach. He led Sussex to domestic success and is one of the highest qualified coaches in world cricket.

"He has worked since 2005 with the National Academy programme and has led tours with the England A Team. He is highly respected as an innovative and inspiring coach and is an ideal person to accept this appointment."

Moores, who had been widely touted in the media as Fletcher's likely successor, said: "It's an honour to have been appointed as England head coach and to succeed Duncan Fletcher, who has been an outstanding coach of the England team. The challenge of this new role excites me and I look forward to meeting up with the players on their return to the United Kingdom and to leading England to success in both Test and one-day cricket."

Moores, 44, coached Sussex in 2003 to their first Championship title in 164 years. He succeeded Rod Marsh as director of the National Academy in 2005.

So, Australia meet Sri Lanka in the final after the Aussies thrashed S.Africa yesterday.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cricket World Cup: Australia crushes South Africa with 7-wicket win

GROS ISLET, St. Lucia (AP) - Australia trounced South Africa by seven wickets Wednesday to move into the final of the World Cup, chasing down a paltry target of 150 with 18.3 overs to spare.

Australia's bowlers blew away South Africa, reducing it to 27-5 before the Proteas rallied to reach 149 all out, Justin Kemp top scoring with 49 not out.

In reply, Australia set up a repeat of the 1996 World Cup final with Sri Lanka with innings of 41 from Matthew Hayden and an attractive 60 not out from Michael Clarke. Australia has reached its fourth successive World Cup final and is seeking an unprecedented third consecutive title.

"It's a fantastic feeling. A great day for us today," said Australian captain Ricky Ponting. "Full credit to our bowlers, they did a terrific job early on. They executed everything really well and once they were five for 27 which says a lot about our bowling group and the batters came out to do what they had to do later on.

"All the bowlers have been fantastic. All four of them are probably in the top five or six wicket takers in the tournament. We're in really good shape and we're looking forward to Saturday coming round pretty quickly."

Hayden hit four fours before he skied Shaun Pollock's delivery for captain Graeme Smith to catch. With the score on 110, however, the damage was already done.

Clarke and Andrew Symonds finished the task off with ease and Australia heads to Barbados for Saturday's final, looking unbeatable.

South Africa has now played in three semifinals since 1992, but has never reached the final.

"It's been one of those tournaments for us," Smith said. "We've been a little bit up and down. At times we haven't played our best cricket but they've really given 100 per cent for South Africa."

Wednesday's victory at the Beausejour Stadium was set up by magnificent work from pace bowlers Shaun Tait and Glenn McGrath. Tait roared in to take 4-29 with his thundering deliveries, while the 37-year-old McGrath took 3-18 from eight overs.

McGrath is the leading World Cup wicket-taker and will retire from one-day international cricket after Saturday's final. He has already retired from Test cricket.

He said he had been helped by a strong breeze.

"It allowed me to swing the ball a bit and I haven't done that for a while," he said.

South Africa had said it would match Australia's power cricket, but it was the wrong tactic as batsmen failed to deal with pace and accuracy, finding edges that wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist snapped up and the innings collapsed.

The one-sided score would have been much worse if it had not been for a 60-run partnership between Herschelle Gibbs and Kemp, who came together with the score on a humiliating 27-5.

Gibbs made 39 and all-rounder Kemp was left on 49 not out while wickets tumbled around him.

In a shambolic finish in near darkness, Australia have overpowered Sri Lanka by 53 runs to win a record third successive Cricket World Cup.

Australia made 281 for four from their 38 overs in the rain-reduced match before Sri Lanka made 215-8.

The Sri Lankans took the bad light offer from the umpires and went off the field when they were 206-7 from 33 overs, sparking wild celebrations from Ricky Ponting's side.

But the umpires insisted the game wasn't over and 10 minutes later play resumed.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting wasn't letting it dampen his team's success.

No, it was one of the sources for that news item on Google News here in the UK. It`s very rare I must admit to get anything from that part of the world.
