Posted by: Isperi

Machu Piccu

Why is it at risk?
The popular route has become too well-trodden (there are an estimated 400,000 annual visitors to the site), and landslides and development nearby have taken their toll on the World Heritage Site. Plans have also been suggested for a cable car and hotel development, which could further threaten this ancient Inca site.

Hasankeyf, Turkey

threatened by Ilisu Dam Project planned to flood the site by 2013

Posted by: vladb

Ancient tannery in Rome.

An ancient tannery that is being dug up in Rome — believed to be the largest ever found in the capital — is threatened by railway construction, and archaeologists said Tuesday they might need to move the entire complex.
....
Experts would scan the complex with a 3-D laser to help archaeologists replace the items in their exact positions, Musco said. The archaeologist, who declined to say how much the project would cost, said technical problems might arise from the fragmentation of the structures and the vastness of the site.

Very good answer vladb but Bigwoo has the right answer! http://www.forumeye.it/invision/htm...cons/woohoo.gif
Cogratulations Bigwoo!
Quote:
Hasankeyf is a small village at the Tigris River, on the road between Batman and Midiyat. A modern bridge now spans that river, but the impressive remains of a much older bridge are standing tall. High rocks house thousands of rock houses, and support a mosque and the remains of an extensive ancient city, now in ruins. The town was founded in Roman times as a border post with Persia. It started out as Cephe or Kiphas, and was renamed Hisn Kayfa by the Arabs who conquered it in 640. Later Artokids and Ajjadubids ruled, until the Mongols plundered it so thoroughly in 1260 that it never regained its glory. The age of the old bridge is unknown, it has been restored in 1116 by the Ortokid Fahr ed-Din Kara Arslan. In the Kale or citadel one can find the remains of an Ortokid palace (not very impressive, though) and a Ulu or Great Mosque. For years the town was expected to be drowned by the waters of another artifical lake, like there are a lot in these areas (the Ilusu Dam Project). .
