What laptop to buy?

I would like to buy a new laptop, just wondering which brand (HP? Acer? Lenovo? Sony? Toshiba?...?) you recommend. I will use it just for internet, office applications, photos editing, watching DVDs, battery life should be 2+ hours and prize no more than $1100. Any suggestions?

I have no experience with laptops at all. The desktop I now have is a `Dell` which I really like. Have you looked in to buying one of those at all Nina?

I was very happy with the second-hand Dells I bought, my current computer is a HP.

My first notebook was an Acer, and had a 10-hour rated battery life. (In practice, it was closer to 5 or 6) It had no fan, only thermal heat exchange.

But that was 10 years ago, they don't make them like they used to.

It will be my first laptop. I considered to buy one from HP. Do you think that Dell is a good brand for laptops. Which HP or Dell would you recommend (less than $1100)

I don't have much experience as well, but I don't think the brand will be as important. I would just decide based on the features (cpu, hdd, screen, price etc) that it has

Check this review site out, it may help.

And make sure that you have warranty coverage where you live.

I bought my last HP in France, and when I was in Poland, HP Poland didn't sell the computer, so I had to send it to a friend in France, spend almost 2 months talking to HP (30 minutes on hold each call) until they finally picked it up, then it was repaired and returned to my friend's house in 3 days!

Personally, I like Sony products; they usually come loaded with the best features. But this is really a matter of personal preference. Some people strip down to the HD and processor and use their own S/W library to add just what they want, which is sometimes a more useful approach.
Also, you may want to consider a Mac for a better OS.

Except that mac has practically no market share in Europe, so prices are up. (Did you get the new OSX leopard, golddust? I see they are incorporating the Vista file version option, and the linux multiple desktops! )

I have an adversity to Sony after their 2 attempts at rootkitting. http://www.google.com/search?q=sony+rootkit

Just my 4 cents worth.
