Munich Air Disaster Memorial
SURVIVORS of the Munich air disaster were due to fall silent today at a memorial service at the time of the crash 50 years ago.

They were to be joined by millions of fans of Manchester United, and football fans in general, in remembering the tragedy, at 3.04pm on February 6, 1958.

Twenty-three people, including 11 players and club officials, eight journalists, two crew members, a travel agent and a supporter, were killed when their plane, returning from a European Cup clash, crashed on an icy runway in Munich.

Manager Sir Matt Busby, who was born in Lanarkshire, survived the crash to lead the club to European Cup glory ten years later.

Sir Bobby Charlton was among the survivors and fans due to attend today's service at Old Trafford. In Germany, hundreds of fans were to gather for a memorial service at the site of the tragedy.
