Virus Alert Issued Novarg or Mydoom You may have noticed receiving some email today January 27, 2004 with attachments. Those with anti-virus software were more than likely warned immediately of these two viruses. They go by the name of Novarg and Mydoom. These email are arriving with subjects like [test, hi, hello, server report, mail delivery system, status, error, and mail transaction failed. At least these are the ones received to staff. The contents of the messages in the body of the email are one of the following; *Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available. *The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment. *The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment. Oddly these virus attacks are coming with 2 attached files. One being a common text or html file, once people looks at the first; they are easily manipulated to expect no problems from the second file. This is the virus file using the usual file extensions like .pif .exe .zip .scr and .bat. These extensions are the dangerous ones and carry the ability to run applications on your PC. Now for the bad news When your computer is infected by this virus, it will automatically search for every email address you have stored on your computer, and will then send out the same email that were received. The virus will also open a backdoor on infected PC’s to allow a hacker the ability to enter your computer and check all your files. That does include the ability to check for passwords and other important information you may have on your computers. How to stop it? Do not open any attachments, and delete immediately. Let your anti-virus software quarantine the file if necessary. It is suggested that if you DID open one of these attachments and now believe you are infected to shutdown your PC and gets it cleaned |
