It was originally feared she had been damaged beyond repair but luckily, only 5% of the ship’s original fabric was lost in the fire. The ship was already undergoing a major restoration and thankfully many of her most valuable timber structures and contents had been moved to Chatham Dockyard prior to the blaze. As Ian Bell, leader of the conservation team explains, the restorers are now busy cleaning up the charred decks and replacing those that are unsalvageable. No expense has been spared with both the materials and workmanship going into the recreation. Teak reclaimed from a hospital in India is being used to rebuild the ship’s planking. The wood dates from around the same period as the old lady’s construction and resembles exactly the sort of materials shipyards were using in 1869. The extra work caused by the fire has set the Cutty Sark Trust’s conservation programme back nine months and cost an additional £10 million. It will be time and money well spent to restore a Great British icon to its former glory. |
