FLO going Private : Details

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Dear Fellow Forum Members

I'd really appreciate it if some of you could post some solid details for me, please.

Unfortunately, I live in an area where we do not (as yet) have broadband. From several posts I've seen, I believe surfing the FLO web-site is hard going even if you are on broad-band - but when you're using dial-up, then trying to move around the FLO site is akin to dancing on peanut butter!

Accordingly, I've given up trying to wade through newsletters, chat-rooms etc. etc to find out details, hoping some of you who HAVe managed to navigate their site could fill me in.

I believe FLO is going private, so all and any details would be appreciated.

For example ...

* WHEN is it going private?
* What PROTOCOLS are in place for members entering into this ?
* Will the regular Ventures (e.g. the 1 week, 2 week etc) still be available, or will they stop ?
* If someone decides not to "go private" and they still have (let us say) 2 weeks left of their 4-week venture, what happens? Will FLO allow such people to complete their present investment cycle and then withdraw all the money?

etc. etc. etc.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to reading your helpful, FACTUAL information (Please note : I'm not asking for speculation about what might happen ... what has actually been OFFICIALLY said about this all ?)

With my best wishes,

Dr. MaC

* October 1 is the *projected* date, although that is NOT set in stone yet.
* I'm not sure I understand your 2nd question. Could you rephrase please?
* The current regular ventures will stop.
* Yes, the current ventures will be allowed to mature and then the money outexchanged.

I hope this is of some help to you,

Regards,
CT

Do you have any details regarding the new ventures?

This is all private information. Come and join www.freelandopps.com and read the forum. #-o

Dear CT

Thanks for your reply.

By "protocols" I was trying to ask what present members need to do, the steps they need to take, in order to "get into" the private side.

------------------------------
To BIGLC

Yes ... I take your point that the information is on the website.

However, if you read my post again you will see why I find it extremely difficult to get information from your site : namely, that at the best of times it is slow to navigate ... but when you're on dial-up (like unfortunately I am) then it becoms an exercise in painfully severe frustration!

That's why I asked for some simple guidelines as to what is going on.

-------------------------------

Best wishes to all ...

Sounds like you are a lazy person that wants to be spoon fed. I know several people that navigate the site fine with dialup.

Sorry to disagree BD.

I have dialup and navigating the FLO site is a nightmare. :-({|=

It`s the slowest site I have ever used, which is why I hate having to go into it.

Once I get my account balance, sort out my ventures etc I usually prefer just to get out of there.

Geoff

Thanks for confirming that, Geoff.

In fact, if you surf around the various forums, there are many posts that confirm just how dreadfulfully slow the FLO site it.

But, perhaps BigDawg has been too lazy to surf around to have seen those posts!

Best wishes,

Dr. Mac

Ok, I apologize for my post. I've used dialup at FLO's site a couple of times and was able to navigate at a reasonable speed. Your's and Geoff's dialup speed must be below par.

Have you folks tried any of the "boosters" for dial-up? Don't know if they work or not or if they're available to you.

Broadband isn't available where I live, either -- though it's available 10 miles away! So I opted for cable internet access. Then there's always satellite, but I hear the weather can affect it.
Of course, I don't know if these are available in UK, either.

Well I dont if it any different now as it was 5-6 years ago in the UK but British Telecom then was an expensive hobby .
The cost to stay on the internet was quite astronomical I think when I left it was 1 pence a minute plus your dial up charge for the ISP.
I used to run up a phone and internet bill around 400 GBP every quarter + another 30 GBP for the ISP.

They were in the throes of selling off parts to private companies and I remember one company giving you free interent from 6pm to 8 am as long as you were registered with their company but it was a slow connection then .
They are not as lucky as you or I if I remember in Australia it is just the ISP and the one call of 18 cents for a four hour duration 4hours in the UK would have cost me then around 2.40 GBP and I believe in The US OF A it is even cheaper arent all local calls free and they only start to charge you when you leave your local area
But it has always been expensive to live in the UK Thats one reason why I intend to retire in OZ plenty sun and not to dear just right for the old retiree )

Yuck!!! I had no idea.

Yes, in the USA, the ISPs have plenty of local numbers where one just picks the number nearest to them (usually several). I can't imagine getting any extra charges. Doubtful I'd be on the net if that were the case. I'm too cheap! LOL

Unfortunately, it's probably not available worldwide, but Netzero is a totally free service (with banners) that I use for a backup when my cable service is ever down.

Glad you found your place in the sun!

Now that the Telecoms industry has been opened up to competition, things are far better, price wise.

Broadband is now available in many areas of the UK too at a slightly higher price than dialup.

Dial up on a pay as you go costs from around 1p to 2p per minute. OK for very light users.

If you have a monthly package, which I do, you pay anything from say, Ј7.99 per month, for 20 hours use per week, to Ј15 for 40 hours use.

AOL is about the most expensive at Ј15.99, unlimited use.

Broadband can be obtained for between around Ј17 per month, up to around Ј28 per month.

There are now lots of ISP`s so there`s a far greater choice to go for as well. \/

I pay Ј14.99 per month for 40 hours per week, plus unlimited if I use between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.

I can certainly feel your grief. Here's a solution to the problem I offer. There's a huge flash header on the FLO website that is more than 200 kB in size, which alone would take 25-30 seconds on dialup to load. You can switch flash playing functions On and Off in your Internet Explorer browser using a small utility from this site:
http://www.flashswitch.com/

When you install and run it, it stays in your TaskBar and you can click on it to turn Flash on and off. This will reduce the FLO website pages loading time by 25-30 seconds. However, there's a small problem. The navigation links to forum, calendar, chat, logout etc. are available only on that Flash header and if you switch flash off, you can't see them. But browsing the forum is possible without flash showing. And when you need those navigation links, simply click on flashswitch utility and click on any link and the top header will load. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.

The Flash header can also be disabled through Control Panel in the FLO site.

Control Panel > Edit Options > Show flash header? yes no

Oh nice, didn't know that, thanx.
Still the flashswitch tool is handy on some sites

Dial up in UK, don't remind me. Last I was there, Tiscali and a few others were offering 'free' service for a bit, if you could get on. Then you'd get a whopping 17 or 18k connection, and be really lucky if it lasted half-an-hour. Then it'd knock you offline for breathing, and trying to get back again? Ouch. Sadly, nothing improved once they started charging past the free offer period - I used to change ISPs every time a new one came out and had a free promo period.

I had AOL as well, but it was useless as *none* of the numbers either local or national seemed to work for my part of London. I believe they eventually ended up getting sued over that.

Glad it's getting better, but I know broadband isn't available everywhere, and if you live in an older building sometimes you have to put up with ridiculously slow speeds because the cost of re-wiring everything to modern standard is outrageous. Then again, I don't seem to remember people in shiny new flats having much better Net access than I did.

Yes, DSL is not as tolerant of distance or wiring as some other 'standards'. I've been on cable broadband for a couple years, and hopefully will be moving to satellite broadband in a few months, if they're willing to install the dish on a dock, which it looks like it should be OK...

Well Doc, we're completely off topic now, so I may
as well carry on

I don't have a problem with broadband, so have
no use for the following service, therefore can
offer you no first hand experience... but, I hear
rave reviews about it & it's forever winning
awards from the PC press:

http://www.onspeed.com

It's pretty cheap & supposedly works... may be
worth a shot

Had satellite broadband, went back to cable! Was much faster!
