Rick, Only 1 Guess per day

Geoff, Fantastic to have you back, I hope that you had a safe and wonderful trip

Could it be a runway??

Posted by: rixzta

Oops...sorry...my bad

Yes...it is great to see you back again Geoff.....hope you are rested up and rearing to go

Posted by: forwardone

Thanks guys, nice to be back. (Missing the sun already, though)

And no, Phil, not a runway.

Geoff

Posted by: admin

What sun I read somewhere that there is no bright sunny days in London, doesn't is just rain all day

Posted by: Laughing Dog

A mile

LD

Posted by: forwardone

No LD, I can`t make them THAT easy.

As far as the sun goes, completely agree about London, it`s only 200 miles from where I live. BUT, Spain at the moment is in the 90`s every day, and it`s that I`m missing.

Hi Geoff
I might have known it would be harder.

Say, have I ever ripped you off or do I owe you any money?

LD

Posted by: forwardone

Hey LD,

How long do I get to think about that one?

Geoff

Posted by: Laughing Dog

Well, I'd say you've already had all day to think about it and obviously couldn't decide if I'm honest or not. Thanks for your support. Refund on the way.

Hi LD,

I`m not going to get in to other subjects in this folder, you know it`s not the right place to discuss such things.

I have however started a new thread at the Debates Folder, which you might want to check out.

Geoff

Posted by: Laughing Dog

I seem to be unable to find this new thread

Posted by: forwardone

It`s there, LD, but would all members please note that this Folder isn`t going to get hijacked by other, I`m sure no less important matters.

Let`s please keep this one a little more light hearted, because I hate having to delete or move inappropriate posts.

Geoff

Posted by: Laughing Dog

Yeah, I found it now. Thanks.
You can delete these posts of mine now. No problem.

The `Bridge` you have linked to, is indeed the Forth Railway Bridge in Scotland.

I thought it might just be a little bit too strict, this one time, to make you actually tell us the name of the bridge.

I must remember in future that we also have Europeans within our membership, who may well be more aware of certain closer-to-home facts than our further away members.

Anyway, as we now have a huge overnight increase in the membership, I can guarantee that the Quizzes will get a lot tougher just to make it more interesting.

So very well done jaukki, please PM me your egold, and I`ll get the $5 off to you.

Quiz No. 12 starts next Monday.

The contract was awarded to Tancard, Arrol & Company on December 21st 1882. Total cost was about 2.5M Pounds plus 0.5M Pounds for connecting railway lines between Inverkeithing Station and Dalmery Old Station. The foundations and piers contained about 140.000 cubic yards of mansonry and about 55.000 tons of steel in the superstructure.
During the constuction of the bridge were 44 lives lost, 93 injuries treated in hospital and 459 treated at home.
The total length of the bridge is 5330ft (1624.6m), the whole length of the structure including both approch viaducts is 8295ft and 9.5in (2528.5m). The total allowance for expansion and contraction is between 6 and 7ft (1.8-2.1m).
The bridge was opened on March 4th 1890 by HRH The Prince of Whales.
The 145 acres of steelwork are painted by a permanent gang of 29 painters who complete the job every three years.

Hi Jaukki

Congratulations on winning the trivia.

Here is another piece of useless trivia in the Photograph that is here of the Forth bridge .
I used to swim in that part of the river forth when I was a lad during the school holidays many moons ago.http://web-life.org/vb/images/smilies/smile.gif)
My sister used to live in a house under the bridge in North Queensferry for many a year when her husband worked as signal man in British Railways.
They state that the Southside is dalmery but in actual fact it is called Dalmeny and the north side is called North queensferry .
Before the Forth road Bridge was built there was a trio of Ferries that we used to use to transport the cars across the river Forth.
Alas the Ferries have seen their day and have been gone for some considerable time.
Since the road bridge was completed in 1964 there was no need for the ferries to transport the cars over the river .
I used to cross regular with my sisters Father in law who was a captain of one of these ferries.
There you go another piece of trivia information http://web-life.org/vb/images/smilies/smile.gif)
regards
memorex

Which just shows that it really is a `small world.`

Thanks for the personal viewpoint on that one, memorex.
