HIGH-LEVEL HEALTH 2
====================
Greetings everybody.
Last week I wrote about the 4 Levels that make up a totally, genuinely, WHOLE-listically healthy person. If you want to understand THIS article and have not as yet read No. 1, may I suggest you first read that, and then come back here.
WHAT IS THE "PHYSICAL" LEVEL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I guess one way of explaining this would be those parts of you that can be physically seen, or touched, or put into a test tube! Like, your skin, your heart, your liver, your blood chemistry, your eyes etc.
It may also be helpful to think in terms of physical systems, for example your Immune system, your Digestive system, your Respiratory system, and so on.
Now, the "Big 3" aspects that are absolutely vital to keeping the physical level healthy (and remember, "health" = "balanced function") are:
1) Intake and assimilation of life-giving nutrients
2) Delivery of these to every single cell in the body
3) Elimination of "waste-products" and toxins
Get these three right, and you should be physically in balance (= healthy) Of course, only being in balance on this physical level does NOT constitute complete good health! There are the other three levels which are also vital (please refer back to article 1 for a brief explanation) But that's for later articles. For now, let's start understanding and getting the Physical level sorted out and in balance!
A. INTAKE AND ASSIMILATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A motor car needs good petrol and air to run. Poor-quality petrol (what you Americans call "gas" !) and polluted air leads to poor performance. Same story with your body.
It's just plain common sense that we need an intake of good-quality food, good-quality water, and good-quality air to be healthy. Also, as physical beings, we need an "intake" of sunlight.
Now, what and what not to eat, what constitutes a good diet or a bad diet, provokes almost as much hot-headed heat and emotion as does a discussion on which religion is the best! (Or who should be the next president!)
I am NOT going to advocate any specific TYPE of diet because, for example, enough meat-eaters die early and suffer from cancer and heart diesease, and everything else, to show this this type of diet leaves a lot to be desired. On the other side of the coin, enough vegetarians also die at an early age and suffer precisely the same diseases, to show that their way of life is not the holy grail of health either!
What I CAN offer are general guidelines that ALL of us should consider, no matter what our personal beliefs are about diet. The following advice for good physical health should be followed by everybody, meat-eater and vegetarian alike.
In a nutshell, it makes sense to include in our daily diet :
a) Whole food
b) Some "living" food
c) To chew, chew, and chew some more!
d) Good quality water
Let's look at each in a bit more detail.
WHOLE FOOD
~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of what I'm about to say really is general knowledge and "common sense" these days. But there's no harm in going over a few important points again.
The majority of the minerals, vitamins, enzymes and other essential nutrients are found in the skin and the husk of foods. Convert (refine) whole meal flour to anaemic, white flour, and the vast majority of the nutrients have been stripped away (and are usually fed to farm animals like pigs!)
It is an absolute insult that manufacturers strip 32 nutrients from flour when they refine it to white, and then brag about how they have "fortified" their loaf of bread by "adding 4 essential vitamins" back into it (and no doubt charge us extra for the privilege) Thanks a lot, buddy! Thanks a lot! What happened to the other 28?
So, in order to get as many nutrients as possible, always do your best to have foods in as whole a state as possible. Whole meal bread, potatoes with their jackets on, whole, unrefined brown rice, fruit with their skin on, and many veggies can be eaten unpeeled as well.
Go for foods that are as whole as possible - that's where the goodness is.
"LIVING" FOODS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Becasue we are alive, living beings, does it not make sense to eat foods that are living as well?
Can you remember that experiment you did at school? Your teacher asked you to bring some beans to class, and you put them into a saucer of wet cotton wool. Remember? And you kept the cotton wool moist, and after a few days ... wow ... magic! The beans started to grow and send up living sprouts!
Now, I want you to do the same experiment again, but this time get two saucers. Take about 8 beans and divide them into two groups, 4 beans in each group. "Plant" 4 of those beans in wet cotton wool just like you did at school.
Now, take the other 4 beans and cook them. That's right. Put them in a little pot of water and boil them for about 15 minutes. Now, place those in the other saucer of cotton wool. Keep both sets of cotton wool damp ... and watch what happens.
One lot of beans will grow ... they are living ... the other lot will not. They are "dead" No prizes here for guessing which does what.
The conclusion? Cooking kills!
I'm not advocating you go on a freaky type of "all raw food" diet. What I AM saying is that it makes sense to put some living food into a living body, as well as the usual cooked, dead food (Long ago you realised that zillions of animals living in the wild - all perfectly healthy - never cook their food. But you knew that already, didn't you!)
CHEW - CHEW - CHEW
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order for the goodness in food to reach every cell in our body, it has to be digested and broken down to an extremely small size.
Well, digestion STARTS in the mouth. The more you chew your food, the better it will be broken down and digested, and the better value you will get out of it.
Apart from breaking down food into smaller bits, thorough chewing also mixes the food with a chemical called chyme. This is a digestive enzyme, so by the time you swallow your food, it is already pre-digested.
Over the last 20 years, I've lost count of the number of patients I've consulted with who have experienced remarkable improvement with their digestive problems - like bloating, indigestion, heartburn, excess wind (both up and down!) etc. etc. - simply by telling them to chew, chew, chew AND to STOP drinking with food, or within an hour after eating.
"Stop drinking with food?" gasp the Americans who think it's the "done thing" to drink glasses of iced water with their meals. "Horror! horror!" wail the British who drink cups of coffee or tea right after eating.
STOP IT! Drinking fluid dilutes your digestive juices and thus food is not digested properly. This means it sits in the stomach, and then the intestines, and ferments. And when something ferments (think of home beer or wine making) it produces ... gas! Also, food that is not digested properly can form toxins, lead to allergies, and a host of other misery.
And just by the way, the majority of my patients who have taken this advice seriously have discovered that they automatically loose weight as an added bonus! Why? Because we need a certain amount of nutrients in order to be satisfied and stay alive. When we chew, chew, chew, we obtain the max. amount of those nutrients from our food. But if we do NOT chew thoroughly, and especially if we drink with food, we do NOT obtain the max. amounts of nutrients, so we have to eat MORE food in order to obtain it. And that excess food ends up as ... UGLY FAT!
So ... CHEW, CHEW, CHEW and STOP DRNINKING WITH FOOD ... and for AT LEAST an hour afterwards.
And talking about drinking with food (or rather NOT drinking with food) this brings me onto the last topic I want to discuss today, and that is ...
GOOD QUALITY WATER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes. Absolutely, It is vital to have an intake of good water.
BUT ...
PLEASE STOP THIS INSANITY OF DRINKING TEN GLASSES OF WATER A DAY! (or whatever amount your own health guru told you to drink)
This is UNHEALTHY!
Sorry, I'm not pointing fingers at anybody now, but this insane idea took root in America and became the "in thing" ... the "buzz health trip" with millions. The idea is that it will "flush out toxins through your kidneys"
Have you EVER asked WHY - all of a sudden, at this extremely late stage of our evolution - why the kidneys suddenly need excess amounts of fluid in order to do their job properly ??? Have you EVER questioned this "drink water" nonsense? Or have you just followed it blindly, without asking questions ... just like 95% of the general population ... many of whom act like blind sheep!
You know who I feel sorry for? The 800 million Chinese who haven't read that book because it hasn't been translated into their language yet. We are soon going to witness the whole of the Chinese race - who used to have a reputation for longevity and living into a healthy old age - dropping like flies - due to "de-hydration" and because toxins are accumulating in their kidneys.
Know what? I also feel desperately sorry of the billions of animals on the planet. I'm an animal lover and I shudder at the thought that soon most of them are going to drop dead as well ... because you see, even if that stupid "drink water" book HAD been translated into animal language, none of them can read in any case! Poor things. A planatary pandemic of dehydration, kidney toxins, and death!
Come on. Wake up and start to ask questions.
Q. When do animals drink?
A. When they are thirsty.
Thank you!
And that's when YOU should drink water as well.
This is not the place to go into scientific and medical details now, but trust me when I say, that drinking excess fluid actually REDUCES the amount of toxins that the kidneys excrete from your body. That's absolutely true - DESPITE what your "guru" said (or that damn book!)
So again, stop the insanity and "blind sheep" acceptance of some crazy notion that some idiot thought was a "cool idea" - because it sure 'aint. Drink when you're thirsty.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
O.K. Now I know some of you will read what I have said above and say, "Well, most of that is just common sense" - and I agree.
But let me also tell you that in over 20 years of practice, and after consulting with thousands of patients, the LEAST common thing I see is ... common sense!
Next time I'll tell you more about the Delivery to body cells, and the Elimination aspects that make up good physical health.
So until then ... think, think, think, and then APPLY these "common sense" ideas to your OWN whole-listic program.
With my best wishes, and in health ...
Thanks Dr Mac
I am beginning to think that one major problem with modern living is eating so many cooked foods, where the the enzymes have been destroyed. From what I have been reading, enzymes control ALL the chemical reactions in our bodies and without them many of the important chemical reactions that are needed to keep us healthy just don't happen
Correct.
But, underneath that are minerals.
Without minerals, NOTHING can work - including enzymes.
Aapart from destroying enzymes directly, boiling food drains an incredible amount of minerals out the food, which then gets poured down the drain!
I am not advocating a raw food diet ... I mean, I love my roast chicken
but as I said in my Article No. 2, it is essential for good health to have a high proportion of "whole" food in the daily diet, and some raw, uncooked "living" foods as well.
