Icehotel, Jukkasjarvi The Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi is known the world over, often featuring in lists of the most unusual or inspiring places to stay. With over 60 rooms, and moving into its 13th year, this is the largest ice hotel – a particular feature being the crystal clear ice blocks hewn from the nearby fast-flowing river Torne. Jukkasjarvi is located 200km north of the Arctic Circle, in the heart of Swedish Lapland, a region inhabited by the Sami. The village has a Lapp museum and picturesque church. There isn’t much else apart from an excellent rustic restaurant, so evenings are usually spent around the Icehotel resort but, after a day filled with outdoor activities, you probably won’t want to stray too far anyway! Over 3,000 tons of ice and 30,000 cubic metres of snow are used to construct the Icehotel. The sight, as you open the main, reindeer-skin clad doors, is simply breathtaking – a grand, ice pillared hallway is lit by a spectacular ice chandelier. Kept at a constant -5°C to -8°C, the interior actually feels quite pleasant, especially when outside temperatures can drop to around -37°C! Walk past several ice sculptures and imaginatively lit ice art towards one of the most popular rooms - the Absolut Ice Bar. With its vaulted ceiling, plenty of ice block seating (thankfully covered in reindeer skins) and see-though bar, it serves an impressive range of colourful vodka ****tails, naturally served in chunky ice glasses. Although hot ****tails are served in not-so-attractive paper cups, they provide an instant form of central heating, but be careful not to leave them on the bar, for obvious reasons! The hotel also has a beautiful ice chapel where many choose to get married or Blessed – either with just the happy couple or with a whole wedding party. Why not allow us handle your wedding arrangements? When staying at the Icehotel, meals are taken in a separate building – the Icehotel restaurant offers an extensive breakfast and lunchtime buffet and an à la carte dinner menu. The cosy basement bar offers a selection of light meals and snacks. One night is spent in a standard ice room or you may wish to upgrade - ice suites have been individually themed often with a striking ice relief, sculptures and a bed that can only be described as a work of art. There are even honeymoon suites, with double sleeping bags! Other accommodation in the resort is heated and consists of Aurora cabins with living area and skylights for viewing the northern lights, and modern Kaamos rooms, with floor to ceiling windows. An extensive range of optional activities are available at the Icehotel and there is a hot tub and sauna facilities onsite. If you wish to extend your stay, or spend a few nights in Stockholm, please contact us for details. |

2 donations were from Geoff and myself and the rest were from the Quiz, so it wasn't worth continuing it, unfortunately
