Hi Terri and Aqua,
Yes, images speak volumes.
It is both facinating and amazing to see the power of nature. Just unbelievable....and these things like earthquakes, cyclones, lightening, volcanoes, tsunamis, tornadoes etc.... could happen anytime, anywhere...!

Incredible as it may sound, in the U.K. we very occasionally get earth tremors on a very small scale. The last one which was noticed by the general public was around 12 months ago in the Stoke, Staffordshire (North Midlands) area. It caused minor damage to roads, caused cracks in the walls and roofs of houses, and was felt for quite a distance from the centre.

Thankfully, as yet, nothing to compare to the big earthquakes.

Many of us know this already, but for the folks who have signed up here at Web-Life in the last two months, "Aqua" f/k/a "Phil" now lives and is an entrepreneur in southern Thailand! Fortunately, Aqua is far enough removed from the coastline hit by the tsunami that his area suffered no tragedy.

Let's give a great big ROUND OF APPLAUSE that we have Phil back here in the forum and that he's A-OK!

Good to know. Perhaps the proceeds from the TG contest could be funneled in through him?

Thanks Terri and Geoff, I am OK, Great to be back

I live about 500 + km from Phuket, where most of the damage occured and even the earthquake caused damage to tracks in the local area where I live, as you can see in the pic below. So it really was quite a massive quake that caused the Tsunami

I was reading the News Ltd web site and Australians have donated over 150 million and the Australian Govt has chipped in with a very large aid package for Indonesia, not sure how much tho

Posted by: forwardone

£3,012,345 was raised yesterday after the biggest radio show ever in the UK where all the commercial Radio Stations got together to raise money for the Tsunami Appeal.

That figure is still climbing, which is fantastic considering that the target was set at £1,000,000. One of the items that was bid on was a tour around the Prime Minister`s residence at 10, Downing Street.

So far the British public has donated over £200 million in the overall appeal.

BANDA ACEH — Indonesia's official death toll from the earthquake and tsunami disaster skyrocketed from more than 50,000 to 166,320 after many people listed as missing were confirmed dead.
The country's health ministry said 166,080 people had died in Aceh, while 240 fatalities were recorded in the neighbouring province of North Sumatra.
The latest tally now appears to be reaching the numbers the United States had warned repeatedly to expect.
The current death toll worldwide is put at 226,000. These areas are going to need every penny they can get for immediate needs, and even more so for rebuilding their future.

I am just beginning to find out how much the whole world has thrown themselves into this and am gratefully amazed at the sums being raised.

Myself and my partner were on Phi Phi island when it hit and are very lucky to be alive. I am currently recovering in a Hong Kong hospital, and with only recent access to the internet had not previously been able to see what was going on in the world.

We are lucky that we were able to return to our own home in another country, unlike thousands of others who have literally lost everything.

Oh, no!!!! I am SO sorry to hear that you were hurt!! That is horrible.

Here's to your speedy recovery Curly!

I thought I remembered posting about this hoaxer when he was first caught by the police, but I couldn`t locate it.

Anyway, the culprit has been punished, as this report shows.

Quote:
A man who sent hoax e-mails to family and friends of people missing in the tsunami disaster falsely confirming their deaths was jailed for six months yesterday.

Christopher Pierson, 40, wrote e-mails to 35 victims' relatives claiming to be from the British Government. Having taken the e-mail addresses of worried relatives from the Sky News website, he wrote to "confirm" that missing people were dead.

Jailing him, Judge Daphne Wickham said the hurt and pain he had put his victims through was "indescribable".

Bow Street magistrates' court was told that Pierson, a father-of-three from Ruskington, Lincs, set up a bogus e-mail account on New Year's Eve and logged on to the Sky News site, where people had posted their addresses in an attempt to get information about a loved one.

Hi Curly, sorry to read about what happenend to yourself and your partner but great to read that you are back in Hong Kong and doing much better now. If you need anything please let us know, Take Care Curly!

Hello Aqua , welcome back!
Curly, I'm very sorry to hear about what happened. You are lucky to be alive as the Island was very hard hit. Get well soon, both!
It seems like the death toll figures won't stabilize shortly. The last one I got is 280.000 deaths ... and still 130.000 people missing in Indonesia.

I see that 2 ex-Presidents of the U.S. have been deployed to tour some of the affected areas.
Quote:
Former United States presidents George H W Bush and Bill Clinton today visited a dusty fishing village that was devastated by the Indian Ocean earthquake-triggered tsunami on Boxing Day.

The two men hope that their visit to the region will remind the world that Asia’s survivors desperately need help nearly two months after the calamity.

Bush and Clinton, stewards of the American relief effort, stood in intense tropical heat as two children who lost family members in the flood presented them with drawings of the disaster.

One showed a giant wave and a rescue helicopter overhead, and the other depicted floodwaters sweeping away people, cars and boats.

The two men, sent by American President George W. Bush, visited Thailand on the first leg of a trip to several Asian countries battered by the earthquake and giant waves.

“I don’t think there’s ever been a tragedy that affected the heartbeat of the American people as much as this tsunami has done,” the senior Bush said in the shattered village of Ban Nam Khem.

“I don’t think you can put a limit on it. It’s so devastating. They’re still finding wreckage, still actually some bodies being recovered.”

After arriving on the Thai resort island of Phuket on Saturday, the two men made their way by US military helicopter and then motorcade to Ban Nam Khem. The former political adversaries said their old differences were irrelevant to the task of providing relief.

“On issues about which there can be no debate, there should be no problems,” Clinton said as Bush stood nearby.

Clinton said estimates showed that one-third of American households had made contributions to tsunami relief, with more than half of those done on the internet.

“When it comes to helping people, politics is aside,” Bush said. “I’ve enjoyed working with President Clinton. We were political adversaries. The current president and he don’t always see eye to eye on issues. But that is not what’s important here.”

A crowd of several hundred villagers and journalists greeted them from behind barriers and a group of Thai school children in red caps and white shirts waved paper American flags.

One banner in the crowd read: “Bill, let’s talk please.”

A military commander told the two former leaders that 2,000 people – about a third of those killed by the tsunami in Thailand – died in the village and surrounding area about 400 miles southwest of Bangkok.

Many of those killed in Thailand were foreign tourists staying in the resort area of Khao Lak.

Clinton praised Thailand’s response to the calamity and said he and Bush hoped they could learn more about how to help.

“I think it’s appropriate to say how grateful we are for the extraordinary leadership of the Thai government and the military forces,” he said.

Soon after the disaster, the current US president named Clinton and former President Bush – his father – to head a nationwide private fund-raising effort to help countries devastated by the deadly wall of water.

The two have come as a US delegation to inspect conditions in tsunami-hit countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives on a trip which is due to end on Monday.

Much of the rubble has been cleared in Ban Nam Khem, but many buildings in the area stand vacant and damaged. Hundreds of Thai soldiers have poured concrete into foundations for new homes, and fishermen have received fibreglass boats funded by the US government.

The official tsunami death toll ranges from 169,070 to 178,118. The number of missing is believed to be as high as 128,426, with most presumed dead.

Clinton attributed the global outpouring of support to the ”staggering” scale of the disaster. He also praised the media for focusing attention on the tragedy.

“The international media has done the best job covering this story that I have ever seen, describing the loss, describing the nature of the problem, describing what’s being done about it,” he said. “We don’t want to let it go too far from the headlines so that people forget about it.”

The tsunami and it's effects globally reflect that all humanity needs to seek common ground. We are all one; this horrific tragedy has a purpose for each to realize.

More than £1 million was raised yesterday in a 20-20 match between an Asian XI team and Rest of the World XI side in the hame of cricket. This game featured some of the top stars in the game.

Quote:

Former England one-day captain Adam Hollioake took a hat-trick to spur the International XI to a six-wicket win over the Asian XI in their Twenty20 Tsunami relief match.

Hollioake marked his return to The Oval, where he was a popular and innovative captain of English county Surrey, with the wickets of Rahul Dravid, Chaminda Vaas and Anil Kumble from successive deliveries.

Former Australia batsman Greg Blewett took the International XI past the Asian team's 157 with 91 not out from 61 balls.

Organisers added more than STG1 million ($A2.36 million) to the relief fund for the tsunami, which struck off the Indonesian coast on December 26 last year.

Two other cricket fund-raising matches have been staged in Melbourne and at Lord's.
