A 67-year-old Romanian woman on Sunday gave birth to a baby girl, which makes her the world's oldest recorded woman to give birth, said the Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest. Adriana Iliescu delivered a daughter by cesarean section early Sunday and one of her twin girls died, said doctors. The surviving girl named Eliza Maria weighs 1.4 kilograms and is in good health. Iliescu, a university professor, told doctors nine years ago that she wanted to become a mother. She had since undergone long fertility treatment, including procedures to reverse the effects of menopause, before becoming pregnant with twin girls seven months ago. However, one of the twins had shown seriously retarded development in the uterus four weeks ago and its heart stopped Sunday. To ensure the safety of the other healthy fetus, doctors decided to carry out a cesarean section. Both the mother and the girl received special treatment in the hospital and doctors said they could go home in a week if anythinggoes well. The previous record was held by an Italian woman who gave birth to a baby boy at the age of 62. |
