Talking about diabetes, this was on the news reports yesterday. Sadly it appears that diabetes is affecting more and more, certainly in parts of the western world.

Cell transplant cures diabetes

British doctors have announced they have cured a man with diabetes by ********* pancreatic cells into his liver.

The 61-year-old man had Type 1 diabetes, the most extreme form, for 30 years.

In the operation, islet cells - which produce insulin - were harvested from the pancreas of an organ donor and injected into the patient.

Professor Stephanie Amiel, a consultant in diabetes at King's College Hospital, London, where the breakthrough treatment was carried out, said the achievement was "hugely exciting".

"The implications for the future are enormous. Eventually this could mean the end of insulin dependence for all Type 1 diabetes sufferers," Dr Amiel said.

The transplant requires a simple, minimally invasive procedure that takes only about 45 minutes. Once there, the cells develop their own blood supply and start producing insulin.

Cinnamon for Diabetes

http://www.lecomptoirdespoivres.com/images/imgcn.gifCINNAMON CINNAMOMUM http://www.foodsubs.com/Photos/ccinnamon.jpgZEYLANICUM ou LAURUS CINNAMOMUM
It tastes good, especially with a pinch of sugar. It smells good, even purported to have male-arousal effects.
Scientists at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) began studies on cinnamon ten years ago. It was then found to make fat cells much more responsive to insulin (that's positive.) They are still working on an ingredient in the plant, but have already found that this substance (MHCP,) prevented the formation of "damaging oxygen radicals...."
As Dr. Richard A. Anderson of ARS states, "It could be an important side effect, since other studies have shown that antioxidant supplements can reduce or slow the progression of various complications of diabetes."

This MHCP ingredient, the ARS found, is water soluble and is not found in the spice oils sold as food additives. Anderson added that this substance reduced blood pressure in animals with high pressure readings.

NOTE: The way to use it, it would seem, is to buy sticks of cinnamon, grind it if you can and add it to bread recipes and as a tea with sugar.

Cinnamon May Help To Alleviate Diabetes

Santa Barbara, Calif. –– Cinnamon may be more than a spice -- it may have a medical application in preventing and combating diabetes. Cinnamon may help by playing the role of an insulin substitute in type II diabetes, according to cellular and molecular studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Iowa State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture
"Cinnamon itself has insulin-like activity and also can potentiate the activity of insulin," said Don Graves of UCSB. "The latter could be quite important in treating those with type II diabetes. Cinnamon has a bio-active component that we believe has the potential to prevent or overcome diabetes."

P.S:
My friend has been adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to his cups of coffe or tea and claims that his sugar levels (Type2 diabetes) have improved markedly!
If you have tried this remedy or intend to, please post your results/comments here for other people's benefit. Thanks!

I suggest if you are using the cinnamon to control diabetes you not use sugar.
Stevia is sweeter than sugar, has no calories and may have a regulating effect on the pancreas.
Both cinnamon and stevia have historically been used as anti-gas remedies.
Nice to think that there are things that are healthy for you that taste good too.

Yes, good point, Candy!

I have read that people with diabetes should be taking a supplement containing vanadium (vanadyl sulphate) and chromium (chromium picolinate) as deficiencies of these minerals may be a contributing factor to adult onset diabetes.
If you do not have diabetes watching your diet to limit sugar surges is still a good idea. There are some indications that sugar surges may cause free radical damage to body tissue even if you are not diabetic.

Some studies have indicated that the amino acid L-arginine helps type 2 diabetes.

My mother is diabetic and has been drinking cinammon sticks with hot water and she thinks it's helping.

She was told you had to use the sticks though and not just ground cinammon.

Red tea is another one that is supposed to help.

Cheers,

Curly
