TRIBUTES to Oscar-winning actor Sir John Mills poured in yesterday.

Sir John, who died after a short illness aged 97, was the archetypal English gentleman in films and on stage for more than 60 years.

His greatest triumph was winning a Hollywood Oscar in 1971 for playing a deformed mute in Ryan’s Daughter.

But Sir John, who was knighted in 1976, will probably be best remembered for his patriotic roles in such films as Ice Cold in Alex.

Director LORD RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH described his old friend as a “truly remarkable man”.

He said: “He was almost unequalled as a world British movie star. There was no-one comparable. He was adored by people he worked with.”

PM TONY BLAIR said: “John Mills was a great actor, a true gentleman and a loyal friend; someone who made us proud to be British. Cherie and I were honoured to be his friend.”

Actor SIR MICHAEL GAMBON said: “He was a joy to be with.” A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: “THE QUEEN was sorry to hear of Sir John Mills’ death.”
