Preliminary Nielsen estimates are that 29.4 million people tuned in to see Underwood win on Wednesday night's show, up from the 28.8 million who watched last year, when Fantasia Barrino beat out Diana DeGarmo for the title. |

A young woman from Oklahoma, virtually unknown only months ago, now has $1 million U.S., a record contract, a new convertible and the title of American Idol to her name. Carrie Underwood won the show's fourth competition Wednesday night, making her the first country singer to claim the title. She beat out Southern rocker Bo Bice, previously considered the favourite. The long-haired rocker is taking it well, though. "I think America did a great job. I think Carrie Underwood fits the bill of American Idol," Bice told MTV.com. Despite his well-known distaste for country music, Simon Cowell said Underwood was the right choice, citing her "likeability factor." Judge Randy Jackson said it was Underwood's rousing performance of the original song "Inside Your Heaven" that sealed the deal. Underwood said the lyrics of the song are fitting and that fate and God had something to do with her recent successes. "Inside Your Heaven" will probably be her first single. She plans to stick with what she knows best for her album — country, saying, "That's where my heart is." Bice originally entered the contest on a bet with his mother, hoping the exposure would get him better gigs in his hometown of Helena, Alabama. He has also secured a record deal, and has a few surprises up his sleeve. "No one's really even seen Bo yet," he said. "It took me half the season to get used to not having a guitar wrapped around my neck. So I'm anxious for the fans to see what Bo's really about." American Idols Live, featuring Underwood, Bice and other contenders from the fourth season, will play Toronto's Air Canada Centre on July 20. |
