Major DDOS attacks occuring

It seems as though atleast a dozen major HYIPs are undergoing and have undergone ddos attacks in the last few days. Seems like every 3 months or so we have one of these major attacks. I'm not too sure what they are trying to accomplish....

I think it`s like when I drive past a bus stop and the shelter has been smashed up. I think they do it `for the fun of it` (in a very perverted sense).
No reason, they do it because they can do it. Admittedly, some of these idiots do try the `blackmail` thing, but that seems to be relatively rare.

can someone explain what a DDOS attack is? i am new to all this, and unable to log into any of the accounts that i just opened a few days ago. prime fund was up yesterday, now i can't get into it again.

I`ll make an attempt, but I`m sure that someone more knowledgable about the `technical` side of things can explain it better than I.
DDoS stands for Dedicated Disruption of Service. I understand it to mean that an individual, with the `right` know-how, can flood a site with unreal users which means that the server is unable to cope with it, and ultimately results in the service in effect collapsing under the weight.
The DDoS can go on for days or even a full week or more, but eventually it has to stop, then things get back to normal. There are protective, but not cheap, measures that programs can take, which I gather work quite well.
As I say, I`m no expert in this field, so maybe someone with a greater understanding might like to add to this.

It is like someone repeatedly dials your telephone so no one else can get through all they get is a busy signal.

DDoS = Distributed Denial of Service
It happens when a bunch of machines across the internet (hence the distributed part) all flood a server with traffic (usually ping requests) until the server or network crashes or becomes so slow requests to the server timeout leaving everyone with a 404 (page not found) error. Unless the server or network is tiny it takes many machines (usually in the thousands to hundreds of thousands depending on the infrastructure) all bouncing requests off the server at the same time.
On a related note, most of the machines used in a DDoS attact are "zombie" PCs - that is the owners of the machines have no idea their machine has been taken over by somebody else. Make sure you download critical windows updates, run an anti-virus, and a firewall to avoid having your machine being turned into a zombie.

Excellent explanation, David.
I thought this article might also be of interest for those interested in this topic.

What IS the actual cost of protection against DDoS attacks, does anyone know? I`ve read figures varying from $300 monthly to literally thousands of dollars a month.

I wonder how many of these `affected` programs will return once the attack is over?
Apparently many have returned, yet I know of one, http://upgain.com which hasn`t. This one got a lot of criticism for directly contacting prominent HYIP members asking them to enter in to a `rent-a-signature` agreement which created a certain amount of hostility towards the program.
I have doubts this one will reappear.

All the Tatijano related programs were initially taken offline by DDOS after switching to a new server. It has been announced that all programs will be back online on 6/4 as they again switch to another server. There has been no further information noted about ddos. It will be 3 weeks down by that date...but I believe they will be back.

As for Upgain, it reappeared for some time after the DDos attack and some members were able to make a withdrawal. It went offline again but at this time, the site is up but I personally can't log in and some who attempted to make a withdrawal only got an error message. I'm giving this some more days before deciding whether it's time to say bye-bye.

A site I see is being advertised at the moment (no surprise). We`ll probably see a few more of these sites springing up in the present climate of mass attacks.
It is helpful in giving a pictorial explanation of what a DDoS attack is though.
