Prostitution may be the world's oldest profession - and an 80-year-old New Jersey grandmother may be the world's oldest madam. State police say Vera Tursi ran the August Playmates escort service out of her apartment outside Camden, N.J., juggling phone calls for sex to supplement her Social Security check. Cops who busted her in a prostitution crackdown last month said Tursi has breathing problems and uses a walker but called customers "dear" when they hired hookers. "She sounded like an 80-year-old woman," state police Detective Sgt. Thomas Cornely told the Newark Star-Ledger. "We were a bit surprised by her age. I've never come across a madam that old." Tursi, who lived with a grandson in the two-bedroom apartment, told cops she took over the business after her daughter died suddenly a few years ago. She allegedly kept $60 of her hookers' $160 hourly fee. Neighbors were shocked by the charge but she was defended by another suspected senior citizen madam - 67-year-old Margaret Cook, who is accused of running another escort service out of her Gloucester Township home. "She's just a really nice old lady," Cook said. "She's the most delightful, darling, wonderful person you could ever meet." |
