Southwest Florida got a chance to dry out Saturday as heavy rains in the early-morning hours associated with Tropical Storm Arlene gave way to sunny skies and warmer temperatures the rest of the day. And forecasters predicted more sunny weather today before scattered thunderstorms creep into the area this afternoon, with temperatures topping off at about 90. That's good news for fans attending the Offshore Super Series Powerboat Races on Fort Myers Beach and others spending the day outside. "I think everyone should carry on with their plans. It won't be a washout," said ABC7 meteorologist Ryan Phillips, who called for a 60 percent chance of rain today. "We got lucky (Saturday). The heaviest rain fell overnight. That helped stabilize the atmosphere." Meanwhile, Morico Salinas stood outside his east Fort Myers apartment Saturday afternoon, staring at about 4 to 5 inches of water that was in his front yard. But he's not concerned. He said his yard always floods when it rains heavily, and he, too, believes the worst of the bad weather is past. "There's no problems here," Salinas said. "It's a little rain. It always floods the yard like this. But I do hope it stops raining soon because it could get serious then." Today should be the last day remnants of Arlene will have a direct impact on Southwest Florida weather by pulling moisture into the area, Phillips said. Rain chances will begin to decrease Monday, forecasters said. |
