A UK-based television channel has apologized to Hollywood A List actor Tom Cruise for its reporter squirting him with water at the premiere of Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds in London. “The stunt was intended to be light hearted rather than malicious and we apologize to Cruise for any offence that was caused,” a Channel 4 spokesperson said. The incident happened at London’s Leicester Square, where 42-year-old Cruise and his fiancée Katie Holmes were attending the premiere of Cruise’ latest flick. A reporter squirted the actor with water from a fake microphone and three cameramen filmed his reaction for a new comedy show Channel 4 is launching. The show would feature celebrities while making them the victim of practical jokes. At first taken aback by the move, Cruise then lost his temper and yelled, “Why would you do that ... why would you do that? Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?” When the reporter apologized under his breath and tried walking away, Cruise caught his arm and said, “Don’t run away. That’s incredibly rude. I’m here giving you an interview and you do that ...it’s incredibly rude.” The actor then proceeded to call the reporter a ‘****’. Later, the police arrested the reporter and the three cameramen, but the four were subsequently released on bail. According to a police spokesperson, the four been told to report to the police station on July 4. They might be charged with assault on Cruise. However, the same prank had a different effect on rocker Ozzy Osbourne’s wife Sharon last month. Sharon avenged a squirt of water by throwing a full bucket of water over the reporter. |
