Wohoo, we are already 2 for Arsenal

Posted by: forwardone

Well, since Manchester United has just beaten Fulham by 5 - 1 I`m tempted to go with hope rather than my gut feeling - United to win the Premiership. There, I`ve voted.

The only other team I would have voted for is Chelsea.

Still at an early stage but Mnchester United are top of the Premiership, and top of the Champions League.

It´s terrible what happened to Petr Cech (Chelsea goalkeeper). But it seems that his state of health is much better.

Petr, get well quickly!
Petre, brzy se uzdrav!

True, we wish him all the best in making a full recovery.

Quote:

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has been warned a return to action too soon after an operation on his fractured skull could prove fatal.

The stark warning comes from Peter Hamlyn, consultant neuro-surgeon and director for centre of sports and exercise medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, writing in the Daily Telegraph.

Cech underwent surgery on Sunday on the injury sustained in a collision with Reading's Stephen Hunt in the Blues' 1-0 win at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

Hamlyn wrote: "If Petr Cech returns too soon from his head injury, the result could be fatal.

"He risks what is known as 'second impact syndrome'. This happens when a second blow causes swelling to the brain before it has recovered fully from an earlier injury.

"It is a situation that could prove fatal, even if the first blow is deemed not to be serious. With that in mind, I would think Cech is likely to be out for at least six months.

"That is about the length of time it takes for stout bone healing to take place. If the brain underlying the fracture has been greatly injured, his time out may be even longer.

"Luckily for him, skull fractures are not normally associated with severe injuries to the brain, which means we can anticipate Cech making a full recovery."

Man Utd 3-1 Man City

Manchester United extended their Premiership lead to nine points with a win over neighbours Manchester City.

Georgios Samaras then brought a fine save from Edwin van der Sar with a crisp volley.

As City attempted to battle their way into the game, Samaras stopped a goal-bound header from Richards virtually on the line, but was unable to turn it past Van der Sar.

City's frustration increased when United doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time - a cruel reflection of the first-half play.

Trabelsi carelessly played Dunne into trouble, and when he was robbed by Rooney, Gabriel Heinze crossed for Saha to bundle past Weaver.

Weaver sustained a knee injury in the collision and was replaced at half-time by Andreas Isaksson, the Sweden keeper making his debut after a £2m summer move from Rennes.

Stephen Ireland also came on for the injured Claudio Reyna, and he swiftly brought another important save from Van der Sar.

Saha missed a glorious chance to add United's third after 52 minutes, but he shot wildly over the top after Isaksson could only block Rooney's shot.

Isaksson then turned over a rising drive from Giggs as United threatened to take advantage of City's need to push forward.

Uniyed had not been at their best, but Rooney was a constant threat, forcing a diving save from Isaksson with an instant left-foot shot on the run.

Sir Alex Ferguson made a tactical switch after 66 minutes, replacing Saha with John O'Shea, who was pushed into a protective role in front of the back four.

Isaksson was in action again two minutes later as United started to produce flashes of their trademark passing game, denying Rooney at point-blank range from Giggs' cross.

But City were refusing to give up and pulled a goal back in spectacular fashion, Trabelsi shooting high past Van der Sar with an angled drive from 18 yards.

Richards was injured in the build up and was stretchered away, to be replaced by Damarcus Beasley.

City's hopes of a comeback were snuffed out six minutes from time when Dunne missed Rooney's cross and Ronaldo turned home.

And to round off City's misery striker Corradi, who had already been booked, was sent off by referee Graham Poll after a ridiculous and unnecessary dive.

With a game in hand to be played tomorrow against Arsenal, the Chelsea result earlier today is excellent for United fans.

Quote:
Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea

Dirk Kuyt took advantage of Peter Crouch's touch to put the skids under injury-hit Chelsea after three minutes.

Jermaine Pennant's brilliant dipping volley effectively sealed the points for Liverpool after 17 minutes in boss Rafa Benitez's 100th league game.

Chelsea staged a minor recovery after the break, but Liverpool could have added a third as John Arne Riise struck the bar with a long-range drive.

The defeat leaves Chelsea six points behind Manchester United - who visit Arsenal on Sunday - and puts Liverpool only five points behind Jose Mourinho's troubled champions.

Chelsea were able to recall keeper Petr Cech after three months out with a serious skull fracture, but suffered a blow after it was revealed defender Ricardo Carvalho was out after being taken ill overnight.

John Terry was still sidelined with a back inury, and with Claude Makelele suspended, Liverpool's furious opening salvo was predictable.

And it reaped a reward after only three minutes when the makeshift central defensive partnership of Paulo Ferreira and Michael Essien was ruthlessly exposed.

Jamie Carragher's long ball was touched on by Crouch, and Kuyt eased his way past Ferreira to side-foot a composed finish past Cech.

And the Czech keeper demonstrated his value to Chelsea three minutes later with a brilliant block from Riise.

But Chelsea, a shambles from the start, did not survive for long and Pennant doubled Liverpool's lead in spectacular fashion.

Pennant, who has struggled to make an impact since his summer move from Birmingham City, took aim as the ball sat up perfectly and sent a stunning dipping volley beyond the outstretched arm of Cech.

Chelsea's day got worse after 20 minutes, when Arjen Robben - who had twisted his ankle in an earlier challenge - limped off to be replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Liverpool were comfortably in command throughout the rest of the half, and despite faint signs of a Chelsea recovery in the early stages of the second period, it was Benitez's side who looked more likely to add to their lead.

Crouch headed tamely at Cech when he should have done better, and he was slow to react when a Riise thunderbolt rattled back off the bar on the hour.

Despite Chelsea's struggles, it still took Mourinho until 17 minutes from time to introduce £30m misfit Andriy Shevchenko at the expense of the anonymous Mikel Jon Obi.

It was too late to make an impact and Liverpool took the points their performance richly deserved.

Manchester United Opponent Lille Charged for Player Protest

Lille was charged by European soccer's governing body for a player protest during its 1-0 Champions League defeat against Manchester United, a match that was also marred by crowd disturbances.

Lille's players held up play during the Feb. 20 round-of-16 game after Ryan Giggs scored with a quickly taken free kick after 83 minutes. The French club, which said the goal shouldn't have been allowed, lost its request for a replay.

Giggs curled his shot into the net while Lille was still preparing its defensive wall and with goalkeeper Tony Sylva out of position. Lille kicked the ball straight out of play at the restart and its players walked to the side of the field where they surrounded referee Eric Braamhaar. A melee involving both squads ensued before the game resumed.

UEFA said on its Web site today it dismissed the protest because ``there was no proof of a technical error'' from Braamhaar. Lille has three days to appeal.

UEFA will also consider possible safety and security violations at the Felix-Bollaert stadium in Lens and the behavior of both sets of fans at a separate meeting of its Control and Disciplinary Body on March 22.

United fans had to be helped to safety by stewards after scaling a barrier to escape a congested stand. Lille blamed the problem on United fans arriving with fake tickets.

The clubs meet again on March 7 at United's Old Trafford stadium in the second leg.

Liverpool - Substitute John O'Shea hit a dramatic stoppage-time winner as 10-man Manchester United beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield to take a huge step towards securing the Premiership title on Saturday.

Former England midfielder Paul Scholes was shown the red card five minutes from time by referee Martin Atkinson after aiming a punch at Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso.

But Ireland international O'Shea pounced unmarked in the first minute of stoppage time after a free-kick by Cristiano Ronaldo to give Sir Alex Ferguson's leaders a crunch victory.

United had failed for long periods to produce the form which has taken them top of the summit yet they were denied what looked a certain penalty when Daniel Agger brought down French substitute Louis Saha in the 78th minute.

In addition they lost Wayne Rooney to injury after he was involved in a crunching challenge with England team-mate Jamie Carragher which has left the striker doubtful for Wednesday's Champions League tie with Lille on Wednesday.

With Barcelona coming to Merseyside in the Champions League on Tuesday, desperate to overturn Liverpool's 2-1 first-leg lead, Benitez had more reasons than ever to indulge in the kind of rotation that frustrates many of the club's supporters.

He made 99 consecutive team changes up until last October and many feel the early-season tinkering was partly to blame for a lack of consistency that meant his team's Premiership title challenge was over before it had begun, with Liverpool suffering five of their seven league defeats to date before mid-November, all away from home.

But these are not normal circumstances and, with Steven Gerrard having expressed his disgust at the idea of United "virtually" securing the title at Anfield, the Spaniard was in no mood to play into Ferguson's hands.

Xabi Alonso, Momo Sissoko, Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy were all restored to the starting line-up, but there was no place for Javier Mascherano, the Argentinian, in Benitez's 16 man squad.

Bellamy had an effort ruled out for off-side
The return of those key players created the desired effect as the hosts made the brighter start with Agger going close from distance while Chile international Mark Gonzalez forced the game's first save after connecting with Steve Finnan's 16th minute cross.

Jose Reina did not have a save to make in a scrappy first-half although Ronaldo, with 16 Premiership goals to his name already this season, was threatening in spells and blazed his side's best chance before the break over the bar in the 23rd minute after good work by Henrik Larsson.

Liverpool continued to carve out the better chances in a fixture regarded as one of the most fiercely contested in the English calendar.

John Arne Riise, one of the goal heroes in Barcelona in February, almost found the net after letiing fly with another spectacular left-foot effort from 20-yards after good work by the busy Gonzalez in the 27th minute.

United fans had to wait two minutes before half-time for their team's first corner as the leaders struggled to impose themselves and it required a fine save by Edwin van der Sar to keep United level two minutes after the break.

A defence-splitting pass by Kuyt presented Bellamy with the chance of the game but the Welsh international was frustrated by United's Dutch keeper who stuck out a hand to prevent his goal-bound effort from crossing the line.

Moments later Bellamy had an effort ruled out for off-side while Riise went close again during a sustained spell of Liverpool pressure.

United, who had Ryan Giggs making his 700th appearance, were anything but their threatening best and Ferguson's frustration continued when Rooney limped off in the 72nd minute after being injured in a challenge with Carragher.

The game exploded in an amazing finale as Saha was upended by Agger in the 78th minute only for the referee to wave away United's appeals.

Then Scholes was red carded for swinging at (and missing) Alonso before O'Shea had the final say.

Larsson to sign off at Middlesbrough

Henrik Larsson has confirmed he will sign off for Manchester United at Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Saturday, despite Sir Alex Ferguson being short of strikers.

Larsson was on target in his final game at Old Trafford in the second leg of United's last-16 Champions League clash with Lille, heading home a 72nd-minute Cristiano Ronaldo cross to hand the Red Devils a 2-0 win on aggregate.

But with the 35-year-old Swede returning to Helsingborgs as planned, Ferguson will be left with just one recognised frontman, Wayne Rooney, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Louis Saha both face time on the sidelines.

Larsson said: "It has been great but we said all along that March 12 was the thing. The Swedish season starts on April 1 and it doesn't give them much time to get a replacement striker. I am very proud to have been part of this team but unfortunately I will be going home."

While Ferguson admitted that he was disappointed that Larsson would be leaving, he felt that there was little that could change his mind.

The Scot said: "He has been a credit to himself. His dedication to his job has never changed and it has been a real joy to have him. We would love him to stay but obviously he has made his promise to his family and Helsingborgs and I think we should respect that - but I would do anything to keep him."

Despite seeing his men claim their place in the last eight of the Champions League, Ferguson was left cursing his luck as defender Mikael Silvestre was added to the list of United's walking wounded.

Silvestre was carried off on a stretcher with a suspected dislocated shoulder and the United boss added: "It is not looking good for Mikael at all. At first we thought he had broken his arm but now it seems it is a dislocation.

"It is another big blow for us because in the space of a week, we have lost five players. Louis will be missing for four weeks, although with hamstrings you can never be sure exactly how long they will be out.

"Ole will not be available until March 31, Darren Fletcher is out for two months and now Henrik is leaving us. It has been a bad week, apart from the results."

Moyes to sue Rooney

Everton manager claims striker 'injured his professional and personal reputation and caused serious embarrassment and distress'

England striker Wayne Rooney is being sued by his former manager David Moyes over comments made in his autobiography, it was confirmed today.

The book, entitled My Story So Far, accuses the Everton manager of being overbearing, controlling and ultimately responsible for Rooney's 27m transfer to Manchester United in 2004. Moyes is reportedly claiming more than 300,000 in libel damages from his former player.

In the book Rooney claims he told Moyes he wanted to leave Everton after a newspaper claimed he had visited prostitutes. The footballer goes on to suggest Moyes leaked details of the conversation to the Liverpool Echo newspaper, which led Rooney to controversially quit the club he had supported from childhood.

MIKEL Arteta was speaking for footballers all over the world when he declared that Cristiano Ronaldo is so good he scares the life out of his opponents.

"Ronaldo is a total football artist," said the Everton midfielder. "The boy frightens even us as professional footballers."

Arteta was eulogising over a young man who was last night crowned PFA Player of the Year - the sixth United player to lift the prestigious award in its 33 year history - and Young Player of the Year.

Ronaldo, who is United's top scorer with 21 goals and the Premiership's leading provider with 13 assists, follows in the footsteps of Mark Hughes, Gary Pallister, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Teddy Sheringham and Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

http://m.gmgrd.co.uk/res/251.$plit/...m_0_ image.jpg

And for those that have watched the Portuguese winger rise from adversity to become one of the finest players of his generation, the accolade will come as no surprise.

The great Eusébio once descibed Ronaldo as "an icon waiting to happen". Now his time has come.

"Over the season he has stood out and shone like a beacon," said the Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock, whose team succumbed to Ronaldo's magic as United beat the Blades 2-0 at Old Trafford last Tuesday.

After the 22-year-old signed a new five-year £31m contract to keep him at Old Trafford until 2012, Sir Alex Ferguson insisted he is as good as Pele and Diego Maradona were at the same age.

What many may fail to realise is the odds that Ronaldo has had to overcome to get where he is today. The spoilt brat tag he has at times carried could not be further from the truth.

Ronaldo was born in Funchal but grew up in San Antonio, a working-class district on the island of Madeira.

He endured a tough childhood, living with his parents Jose Dinis and Maria Dolores, brother Hugo and sisters Elma and Katia in a bungalow so small that their washing machine was kept on the roof.

Maria dos Santos, a teacher at Ronaldo's primary school Escola Sao Joao, said: "From the day he walked through the door, football was his preferred sport. If there wasn't a real ball around - and often there wasn't - he would make one out of socks."

Ronaldo moved to Lisbon at just 11-years-old without his parents. The boy who was renowned for keeping cans in the air with his feet was to be nurtured at Sporting Lisbon's Alcochete academy but life would not be easy.

"Coming from Madeira he has a unique accent and in Portugal some people make fun of it," explains Sergio Krithinas a Portuguese journalist. "Once his teacher [at Escola Barreiros] was calling everybody's name and when she said `Cristinao Ronaldo' he said `I'm here' with his Madeira accent and everybody started to laugh at him. So he launched a chair at the teacher."

On the pitch, however, Ronaldo's talent was never questioned and in the summer of 2003 United acted.

Inspired by Ronaldo, Sporting beat the Reds 3-1 in a pre-season friendly and in the dressing room afterwards the United players begged Fergie to sign the 18-year-old. Soon United's new No7, David Beckham's replacement, was unveiled.

His debut - a 29-minute cameo against Bolton - was nothing short of sensational and the manager later admitted: "It looks like the fans have a new hero".

The irony is that if Ronaldinho's move from Paris Saint-Germain to United had not fallen through at the 11th hour, it is likely Ronaldo, who was being strongly trailed by Arsenal at the time, would never have signed.

More recently Ronaldo has had to overcome the death of his father, false allegations of rape, the media frenzy around accusations that he encouraged Wayne Rooney's sending off in England's World Cup quarter-final defeat to Portugal and doubts surrounding his on-field integrity - booing and diving slurs follow him still.

Despite all that he has won over many of his fiercest critics and the approval of his peers.

"He is the toughest player I have ever come up against," said Reading's captain Graeme Murty, who has been terrorised by Ronaldo twice this season. "He's well on his way to becoming the best player in the world.

"As an opponent you've seen what he has to offer on the TV and you try to steel yourself for it but nothing can quite prepare you for Ronaldo when he is in full flow."

Man. United have just beaten Everton at Goodison Park by 4-2 after being behind at half time by 2-0. The difference was a certain Cristiano Ronaldo who came on as a substitute in the 2nd half for United.

Meanwhile , Chelsea only managed a 2-2 draw against Bolton at Stamford Bridge. The difference in points now stands at five. The reds are certainly now well in the driving seat for the race to the Premiership Title.

Crowned the previous weekend and treated to a guard of honour by deposed champions Chelsea in midweek, United could afford to lose 1-0 to West Ham United on Sunday and still had manager Alex Ferguson describe it "a fantastic occasion."

The result, which secured West Ham's survival, was only United's fifth defeat in a season which they ended with 89 points, six more than second-placed Chelsea.

As an added bonus, United were widely credited with having played the best football -- an accolade never given in the same measure to Chelsea last term.
