'Crocodile Hunter' killed by fish
9.51, Mon Sep 4 2006

Crocodile expert Steve Irwin has been killed by a stingray while diving off the northeast coast of Australia.

The fish pierced the chest of TV's famous khaki-clad 'Crocodile Hunter', while the 44-year-old was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas in northern Queensland.

A helicopter rushed paramedics to nearby Low Isles, about 1,260 miles north of Brisbane, where Irwin was taken for treatment, but he was dead before they arrived, police said.

Local diving operator Steve Edmonson, whose boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident happened, said: "Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest - he probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury."

In 2004, Irwin caused outrage by holding his then one-month-old baby in front of a hungry crocodile. His TV series ended after he was criticised over the incident and also for allegedly disturbing whales, seals and penguins while filming in Antarctica.

Stingrays have sometimes been called the "pussycats" of the sea because of their generally non-aggressive nature. However, when threatened, they can whip up their toxic tails in an instance, causing excruciating pain to humans.

Their barbed stinger grows from the tail like a fingernail and is covered with a toxic venom but deaths from contact with the barb are rare.

The largest species of stingray can grow to about 13ft (4m) in length or width and their tails are often twice as long as their bodies.

What a brave and amazing man he was. I remember seing his movies for the first time few years ago. A great explorer

Yes, he was very passionate about the environment and conservation.

At least he died while doing something he was passionate about. I hope he was not trying to "make nice" with the sting ray, however. Blimey.

STEVE IRWIN is everywhere at Beerwah, the Sunshine Coast town where his Australia Zoo is situated.

Billboard-sized images of the Crocodile Hunter's face, invariably contorted into an expression of utter astonishment, decorate most roads.

It is has been said that he lived his life in capital letters, but there has been nothing clear-cut about Irwin's private funeral service.

Not a skerrick of reliable information could be gleaned about the service, widely thought to have been held at the zoo on Saturday. Or yesterday. Or possibly this morning.

The decision by his family and friends to keep all details of the service secret has fuelled several contradictory rumours and news reports.

After Irwin's body was apparently transported from a Caloundra funeral home, Gregson and Weight, to the zoo at 2pm on Saturday, it was reported that it might have been buried on zoo grounds in the late afternoon.

Family members and close friends, including Irwin's manager, John Stainton, gathered afterwards for a barbecue before leaving the zoo together just after sunset. That had suggested that the barbecue was a wake.

However, when media yesterday sighted a marquee on private property at the back of the zoo, they speculated that a service could have been held that day.

But some wondered whether it had been set up for a separate ceremony for zoo staff. Mr Stainton told one journalist yesterday that reports of a Saturday funeral service were codswallop.

He told the Herald: "I can't comment on any details about the service. I'm just spending some time with the family this weekend, and we're really appreciating the chance to relax away from the public eye, where we can have some space to just be with each other."

He said that Irwin's father, Bob Irwin, would make public details of the service as well as arrangements for a public memorial service at a news conference at midday today.

Two local police officers patrolling the zoo have said they believed Irwin's body was buried on Saturday afternoon - one understood it had been buried beside his home on land behind the zoo, while the other said it had been buried in the grounds of the zoo itself.

However, Irwin's mother, Lyn, was cremated at the Caloundra funeral home in 2000, and there has been much speculation that Irwin had a preference to be cremated too.

One newspaper report yesterday even said that a service was held for Irwin at a chapel at the funeral home on Saturday, although the building was empty at the time.

Yesterday about 250 surfers formed a large circle off Alexandra Headland Beach as a tribute to Irwin. Flowers were placed in the water in his memory.

Hollywood stars, leading politicians and a khaki-wearing choir all said goodbye to the 44-year-old who was killed by a stingray earlier this month.

Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Russell Crowe sent recorded messages to the event which was attended by 5,000 Irwin fans.

His eight-year-old daughter Bindi led the tributes at the Crocoseum in Queensland.

She said: "My daddy was my hero, he was always there for me when I needed him.

"I had the best Daddy in the whole world and I will miss him every day.

"Whenever I see a crocodile I will always think of him. And I know that Daddy made this zoo so everyone could come and learn to love all the animals. Daddy made this place his whole life. Now it's our turn to help Daddy."

Australian prime minister John Howard said: "Steve Irwin touched the hearts of Australians and touched the hearts of millions around the world.

"He did that because he had that quality of being genuine, of being authentic, of being unconditional, of having a great zest for life."

`South Park' creators have outraged fans of the late Steve Irwin by poking fun at his death.

The latest episode of the satiric sketch, entitled 'Hell On Earth 2006', shows the 'Crocodile Hunter' attending a fancy dress party in Hell - along with the late Princess Diana and Hitler - with a stingray poking out of his bleeding chest. Irwin is then kicked out of the party by the Devil because he isn't in fancy dress.

The scenes have sparked outrage among fans and media regulators because they appear to ridicule the wildlife expert's shocking death in September, when a stingray's barb pierced his chest while he was snorkelling near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

British broadcasting watchdog Mediawatch branded the episode "grossly insensitive".

Mediawatch director, John Beyer, said: "This is bad taste. Steve Irwin's family is still grieving. To lampoon somebody's death like this is unacceptable."

'South Park' makers Comedy Central have defended the controversial episode, saying it is no different from their usual work.

A spokesman said: "It has offended people in the past and probably will again. Regular watchers would not be shocked."

Crikey! Irwin's a top Halloween costume NEWS:31 October 2006 http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/images/null.gif

A khaki outfit with a bloody stingray attached to it is one of this year's most popular Halloween costumes in the United States.
The costume has upset American fans of the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, who died in September after being pierced through the heart by a stingray. Others, including US comedian Bill Maher who was spotted in the outfit at a Los Angeles party this week, say they find it amusing.

An article published in the San Francisco Bay Guardian recently on bad taste costumes for Halloween had the Crocodile Hunter outfit at the top of its list.
"Kids and grown-ups alike will stare you down with white-hot horror when you strut around in your khaki ensemble with a pissed off sea creature piercing your chest," the article's authors, Cheryl Eddy and Kimberly Chun, wrote.

"Too soon? Hell, no.

"If Irwin's eight-year-old can get her own Discovery Kids television show, you can certainly make sport of her nature-loving pop's freaky demise.

"Group costume idea: bring along Roy Horn and Montecore, and Timothy Treadwell and the Big Red Machine, and you've got your very own When Animals Attack all-star team!"

The controvery comes just a week after an episode of South Park featuring a dead Steve Irwin with a stingray tail impaled in his chest caused outcry in the US.

All way too soon to be having fun at the expense of someone`s tragic death in my view. Maybe I`m just old fashioned.
