I use DD information I find on forums and "search" for corroborating data. This could include searching google, yahoo, etc. I verify the IP address, location and registry information. There are a lot of HYIPs that use 'anonymous registration', and I would rather accept that then obviously false - address, phone, names - that's just part of the 'risk'.
Also if email is provided, I am suspect of sites with free email addys eg - yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc. If it's a real program, it should have its own mail server.

I search the site for information as to how funds are generated and other contact information, affiliated companies, etc. I will not join a program hosted by KG because they host nothing but scams, IMO.
I use the following sites to research the IP address and look for other information:

I belong to a forum that completes DD for its members including a "bad IP List", updated every 2 weeks.

There are lots of things that people can do to quickly get a better feel for a program. I think the quickest thing to do is email the admin with some intelligent questions and hope that you get an intelligent question back. This is only a start, and Scammers know the right answers, but "no" answer would definitely exclude them.
The other thing worth mentioning is to not be gullible. I know that newbies are victim to this many times. Most people are raised to 'trust' and don't like to believe that someone would lie to them. Soon you learn don't take it personally; it is right to question everything.
